School-Year Volunteering Opportunities

Coaching Walltown Basketball Teams.  We have 3 boys' basketball teams with the Durham Parks & Rec Junior NBA program.  We need assistant coaches who are willing to help transport players and assist with the one-night-a-week practice & Saturday games.  Female coaches interested in starting girls' teams are more than welcome!

Assisting with Saturday Basketball Clinics.  Some children cannot make the commitment to be on a team, but they would be interested and available for a Saturday clinic.  We need people who are willing to assist with the clinics (no special skill required) and others who could provide snacks.

Tutoring Youth.  Individual tutors are needed Monday - Thursday (one hour between 4pm - 6pm) to assist elementary, middle, and high school students with academic skills and homework.  It is most helpful if the volunteer will consider making a commitment to tutor once-a-week on a specified day for at least one semester to provide consistency and continuity.

Mentoring a Walltown Youth.  We all know that each child can benefit from some special attention.  This volunteer opportunity would begin with basic homework help and attending some of the child's special school events; however, it is our desire that the relationship would flourish and have a long-lasting impact on the child's social, emotional, cognitive, physical, and spiritual well-being.

Joining us for the Great Human Race.  Each year Urban Hope team members, youth, and volunteers walk/run in this 5K race to raise funds for our year-round programs.  Consider finding sponsors & join us on March 27, 2010!

Group Opportunities.  We greatly appreciate groups willing to volunteer their time, especially if they have a particular project they would like to tackle.
